Information on Public Service Position Reclassifications now available online

AMENDMENT

OTTAWA, November 4, 2004 – Reg Alcock, President of the Treasury Board of Canada, announced today that information on the Government of Canada’s reclassification of federal public service positions is now available on-line.

“Today’s announcement delivers on our commitment of this past February to disclose information on federal public service position reclassifications, said Mr. Alcock. “And this is another step in our effort to promote greater transparency and accountability across government.”

The reclassification of a position occurs when the evaluation of its work description results in a change to either, or both, its occupational group and level due to a significant change in the work assigned to it.

The new requirement applies to public service position reclassifications dating back to April 1, 2004 for all departments and other portions of the federal public service listed in Part 1 of Schedule 1 of the Public Service Staff Relations Act.

Departments and agencies are required to report the data on their Web sites, within 30 days of the end of each period and to update it every three months. The information reported includes: the organizational component, position title, previous and revised position classifications, and reason for the reclassification decision.

This initiative is part of the government's plan, Strengthening Public Sector Management.

To achieve these objectives, the government is working hard to:

  • strengthen comptrollership and improve oversight;
  • enhance the role of Parliament and the proactive disclosure of information so that Canadians are better able to hold Parliament, their Government, and public sector officials to account;
  • modernize and transform management practices and the ongoing review of government spending to improve administration and ensure tax dollars are spent wisely; and
  • build capacity and better tools within the public service to support good management.
