1818Birth of George Brown
Journalist and politician George Brown was born in Alloa, Scotland. Brown’s newspaper, the Toronto Globe, became a platform for his Liberal politics. A Father of Confederation, Brown supported a federal union by joining his Conservative rivals, John A. Macdonald and George-Étienne Cartier, in a pro-Confederation coalition. After Confederation, Brown retired to oversee his newspaper.
