Recruitment Programs
The Accelerated Economist Training Program (AETP) provides high-calibre students with exposure to a variety of policy issues, experience in analysing sector responsibilities, and a broad view of the role, mandate, and modus operandi of various departments and agencies in the federal government. The AETP provides four six-month assignments at host departments with economic and public policy sector responsibilities. With the exception of regional postings, all assignments are located in the National Capital Region. Up to 14 persons are recruited each year. The program is based on internship, with little formal instruction.
This Fall, Industry Canada will be attending career fairs at universities across Canada to recruit students for commerce officer positions who have received their master's degree by June 30, 2006 and for economist positions, students must receive their master's degree by September 1, 2006.
The Management Trainee Program (MTP) provides a pool of highly qualified candidates for managerial positions in the federal Public Service; and it provides talented graduates with the opportunity to hone their skills and "fast-track" their careers. The program is open to recent Master's graduates in any area of specialization. The MTP provides hands-on work experience through assignments with federal departments and agencies.
On behalf of all federal government departments, the Public Service Commission advertises jobs in specific fields aimed at post-secondary graduates. Recruitment campaigns are held in the Fall and the Spring of each year. Watch for deadlines and apply on-line at this site.
Student and Internship Programs
Industry Canada's Community Access Program (CAP) aims to ensure that Canadians have affordable access to the Internet and related information technologies. CAP is also integral to the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy, as the program offers three-month internships and other job opportunities for over 1,000 young Canadians each year.
Through CAP, youth aged 15 to 30 are hired to help connect communities across Canada to the information highway and to promote its use for local economic and social purposes. Working in Community Access Sites, particularly in rural and remote communities, CAP youth interns help small businesses, community organizations and individuals of all ages increase their knowledge of the Internet and related information technologies as well as acquire the skills to use them effectively. This work experience enables youth to gain practical knowledge and marketable skills in the rapid-growth area of information technologies. Interns also develop teaching, marketing and business skills, and build their core employability skills.
The Computers for Schools Program repairs and refurbishes surplus computer equipment donated to the program by federal and provincial governments and private-sector organizations. The computers are then donated to schools and public libraries across Canada, with a goal of donating 250,000 during the current phase of this project.
Interested applicants will perform repair and refurbishment functions in one of the program's 68 repair centres across the country. They may also provide on-site installation/network assistance to information technology staff in local school boards.
There are separate programs for youth without a high school diploma and youth who have graduated from a secondary or post-secondary institution. Youth without a high school diploma should call the YMCA at 1-800-495-8775. By completing a six-, nine-, or 12-month paid internship in one of the Program's Host Organizations, the Interns gain the skills and experience they need to become more marketable in the workplace.
The Federal Student Work Experience Program gives full-time secondary school, CÉGEP, college, technical institute and university students a fair and equal access to student jobs offered by the Public Service of Canada and opportunities to learn about the federal government and gain valuable experience while developing and improving their employability skills. Managers at Industry Canada use this program to find high calibre students. There is no deadline for applying to the general inventory. The core of the program is a computerized national inventory of students seeking a summer job with the federal government. This inventory is administered by the Public Service Commission (PSC) of Canada.

Industry Canada's Communications Research
Centre 'Research Affiliate Program'
As part of the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), the Communications Research Centre (CRC) recruits students to work at their Shirley's Bay (Ottawa) location. The CRC generally conducts research in fields related to networks research, satellite communications, radio sciences, communications devices and components research, and television broadcast technologies.
Preference for entry into the Research Affiliate Program may be given to students who study in: computer engineering, computer science, electronics, psychology (behavioural), electrical engineering, physics engineering, electronics engineering or physics.
NetCorps Canada International offers exciting volunteer internships in developing countries to young people (ages 19 to 30) with appropriate skills in information and communication technologies. These internships of approximately six months are implemented by some of Canada's largest volunteer-sending international development organizations including Canada World Youth, CUSO and Oxfam-Québec.
The federal government has employed over 5,000 students each year under this program. Industry Canada is a prime user of this program. In partnership with participating academic institutions, the Public Service of Canada plays an important role in providing post-secondary students with the relevant and practical work experience they need to fulfil the requirements of their academic program. Student Connections, an Industry Canada initiative funded through the Youth Employment Strategy, hires and trains post-secondary students and recent graduates as Student Business Advisors (SBAs). These SBAs provide on-site customized Internet training, assessments, and e-commerce services to clients across Canada. As part of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, the Canadian Patent Office is responsible for granting patents in Canada. Its role in granting patents is to acquire and disseminate technological information and to encourage the creation, adoption and exploitation of inventions.
