What is the Tax Information Slips online service?

Tax Information Slips is an online service that makes it more convenient to get your tax slips. Your tax slips are available online as early as February 1st.

The Tax Information Slips service allows OAS and CPP benefit recipients to view their slips (T4/NR4) online, print them, and elect to stop receiving them by mail in future years.

If you used the Tax Information Slips online service last year, you can also access your 2003 tax slips online. Slips that are printed are considered official. They may be used to file an Income Tax and Benefit Return to the Canada Revenue Agency.

As of this year, the Tax Information Slips online service is available to recipients of OAS/CPP benefits under a social security agreement with another country.

How do I access the Tax Information Slips online service? What is an access code?

If there is an access code on the top right corner of your tax slip, you can access your slips online. If you used the online service last year, you can also use last year's access code to login this year. You can view and print your tax information slip from both 2003 and 2004.

You may not have an access code for the following reasons:

  • You have no social insurance number. In this case, we encourage you to get one.
  • You are between 18 and 25 years of age and receive a CPP children's benefit.

To use the service, visit Tax Information Slips online.

The tax information slips online access code is different from one you may have from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Can I still get my tax information slip in the mail?

Though the Tax Information Slips service lets you view and print your slips online, we will continue mailing your tax slips unless you specify otherwise.

The service does give you the option of stopping the mailing of your tax slips in future years.

2004 T4 and NR4 tax slips

What type of income statement will I receive?

You will receive a T4 income statement for each benefit you receive. If you receive both OAS and CPP, you will receive two T4 tax information slips.

If you live outside Canada and receive CPP and/or OAS benefits, you will receive NR4 tax information slips.

If you receive a CPP disability benefit, you will get either a T4 and/or an NR4 tax slip, depending on whether you live in Canada or abroad.

Your slips are accompanied by inserts with information about your benefits. If you are getting your T4 or NR4 income statements online, and have asked us to stop mailing your tax slips to you, you can view these inserts selecting the links below:

Why did I receive two T4s in the same envelope?

If you received both Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan benefits in 2004, then you probably received two T4s in the same envelope. Combining the two T4s in one envelope saves tax dollars for Canadians.

If you received both OAS and CPP benefits and your T4s came separately, it is because the CPP and OAS client files are separate. There may be slight differences in the way the files are organized, preventing us from mailing them together.

How do I know which T4 is which?

The Old Age Security T4 is white, and says "This is your Old Age Security T4A (OAS)" in the top right corner of the first panel.

The Canada Pension Plan T4 is orange, and says "This is your Canada Pension Plan T4A (P)" in the top right corner of the first panel.

Why does my name appear differently on my OAS and CPP T4s?

Because your OAS and CPP files are separate, your name may look different in each, as the files have not been set up in the same manner.

Why has the address on my OAS/CPP T4 income statement been changed from French to English (or vice versa)?

We put our OAS and CPP mailing list through a process that standardizes the way the addresses are written. This helps Canada Post deliver our materials more quickly. It also results in savings to taxpayers since we can take advantage of special Canada Post discounts.

The standard requires that all addresses comply with the language standards of the province or municipality where they are situated. This means that some addresses were changed from English to French, and some others from French to English.

Please note that only the language of your address has changed. We will continue to correspond with you in your language of choice.

Can I change my address back to its original language and can you make sure that my address will not revert back to English (French) in the future?

Yes. Your address can be changed to the other official language. If you wish to do this, please contact us.

If your address does revert back, please do not hesitate to call us to request a change of language for your address information.

What if I need a duplicate tax information slip or my T4/NR4 is incorrect?

If you have Internet access, you may be able to view and print a duplicate immediately using the Tax Information Slips online service.

Or, to correct information on your tax information slip or to request a duplicate T4/NR4, contact us.

Why haven't I received my OAS/CPP T4/NR4 tax slip this year? How do I get a copy?

It's possible that you have not received your T4/NR4 tax slip in the mail because last year you used the Tax Information Slips online service and chose to discontinue your mailing.

If you have last year's access code, which is located on the top right corner of your 2003 tax slip, then you can get your T4 or NR4 tax slip online through the Tax Information Slips service.

If you no longer have your access code, contact us to request it.

Top of page

Why did I receive both a T4 and an NR4 tax information slip?

You will receive an NR4 for when you lived outside Canada during the tax year. Your T4 tax slip covers when you resided in Canada during the tax year.

I would like to volunteer or take some courses. Do I have to tell the CPP about volunteering or school activities?

No, you do not need to report volunteering or taking some school courses. The CPP encourages you to remain active in your community and supports your efforts as a volunteer or a student. Your CPP disability benefits will continue while you volunteer or take some courses.

I am receiving a CPP disability benefit. How much am I allowed to earn this year?

You can earn up to $4,100 from work in 2005 without informing us and without losing your benefits. Once you earn $4,100, we would like to talk with you about your current work situation and your future work goals. If you can work only once in a while, you may be allowed to earn more than $4,100 while still receiving CPP benefits.

What happens to my CPP disability benefit once I turn 65?

At the age of 65, your CPP disability benefit will automatically change to a CPP retirement pension. This retirement pension will be less than your disability benefit. However, you can apply for an Old Age Security benefit at 65, which may bring your income close to your disability benefit.

Do I have options for filing my tax return?

Yes. The Canada Revenue Agency offers seniors the option to file tax returns by phone or by using Telefile service for seniors Government of Canada site or Netfile Government of Canada site.

Why is the information insert with my T4/NR4 tax slip from Social Development Canada, and not from Human Resources Development Canada, like my tax slip?

On December 12, 2003, the Prime Minister announced a new federal cabinet. Human Resources Development Canada was divided into two new departments: Social Development Canada and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

We are in the process of making Social Development Canada a legal entity. Until that time, any legal documents must refer to Human Resources Development Canada. Your 2004 tax slips are a legal document, whereas the information inserts are not.

This process will be completed in the coming months and Social Development Canada will appear on your 2005 tax slips.
