DFO and the United Nations Climate Change Conference

december 5,  2005

The United Nations Climate Change Conference: Montreal 2005From November 28 to December 9, 2005, Canada is hosting the United Nations Climate Change Conference, together with the City of Montréal. DFO is taking part by hosting the "Oceans" booth at the Canada Pavilion, and by bringing the research vessel CCGS Amundsen, a Canadian Coast Guard vessel, to the Port of Montréal from December 5 to December 8. Public tours of the CCGS Amundsen are available at the following times: Dec. 5 (1-3 pm, 6-8:30 pm); December 6 – 8 (9-11am, 1-3 pm, 6-8:30 pm).

In partnership with Laval University, the CCGS Amundsen was recently refitted by the Government of Canada to play a new role as a dedicated platform for Arctic research on climate change. The objective of this initiative is to raise international awareness of Canadian Arctic science, and to answer major questions on the effects of global climate change in the Arctic. The vessel is staffed by Canadian Coast Guard personnel, who provide operational and navigational expertise to the ongoing Arctic research projects. On board the Amundsen, university and federal government scientists work with scientists from around the world to conduct Arctic studies dealing primarily with research on climate change.
