Conclusions and Further Research

Daycare plays an important role in the job search process. 81 per cent of those who require daycare find it adequate for their labour market needs. Still there are the 19 per cent who have experienced some difficulties as a result of lack of daycare. An overwhelming percentage of these individuals experiencing these difficulties are women. This was not changed during the period of EI reform.

This version of the report focuses primarily on the impact of EI reform. In later versions of this report, there will be a more in-depth exploration of these issues from a gender perspective. This will be done through a more thorough analysis of the data. For example, many results will be provided for single mothers. As well a literature review will be included, so as to provide context for the results. An example where this would be useful would be to suggest why problems with daycare are less prominent in Atlantic Canada and Quebec. In addition, initial indications in this version of the report are that knowledge and data occupations are more sensitive to difficulties in daycare availability. This suggests that it may be useful to further investigate the relationship between daycare availability and the nature of employment.
