Welcome to the Pacific Region
Marine Protected Areas Home Page
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is working
closely with Parks Canada, Environment Canada and the Province of
British Columbia to develop a network of marine protected areas on
Canada's Pacific coast. This commitment was outlined in a
document released in 1998 entitled "A
Marine Protected Areas Strategy for Canada's Pacific Coast".
Since that time, the federal government
has been making progress in developing marine protected areas using
various legislative tools. For example, Environment Canada has
been working towards establishment of the Scott
Islands as a Marine Wildlife Area, while Parks Canada has been
working towards
development of National
Marine Conservation Areas in Gwaii Haanas and the Southern Strait of
Georgia.
Fisheries and Oceans has also been working
towards establishing marine protected areas under the Oceans
Act. Endeavour Hydrothermal
Vents was recently announced by the Minister of Fisheries and
Oceans as Canada's first protected area under this legislation.
In the meantime, Fisheries and Oceans has been making progress on the Bowie Seamount and Race
Rocks MPA candidate areas. In the future, marine protected
areas created under the Oceans Act will be identified through
Integrated Management planning processes.
