PWGSC - Real property

Business

As custodian for $7 billion worth of real property holdings, PWGSC relies on numerous external organizations to deliver its services.

By working in partnership with the real property industry, PWGSC benefits from private sector expertise, achieving the best possible value for Canadian taxpayers.

On September 6, 2005, PWGSC issued a Request for Proposal to seek independent advice on new creative ways to better manage government office buildings. This exercise, known as the Real Estate Study, will include 326 office and common-use properties.

Under an Alternative Forms of Delivery (AFD) model, PWGSC partners with the private sector to deliver real property services, but retains full accountability for standards and performance. Multi-year contracts have come into effect on April 1, 2005 with SNC-Lavalin ProFac Inc. for property management and project delivery services in most of PWGSC's office buildings across the country.

Each year, we award some 2000 construction contracts worth more than $700 million, and over 500 contracts worth some $75 million for architectural and engineering consulting services.

We work closely with key associations and organizations to maintain strong Canadian and international knowledge in the area of real property. PWGSC has agreements with Canadian associations of architects, professional engineers, interior designers, building managers and appraisers.

And we promote collaborative relationships within the Canadian public works community by actively participating in the Federal-Provincial-Territorial Deputy Heads of Public Works annual conference and its companion Collaborative Initiatives Network Web site.
