Transit Pass Program
November 25, 2004
Check against delivery
I would like to thank everyone for coming to this very special
launch event… an event that underlines our commitment to "greening"
government.
I'm pleased to say that we're acting on our commitment regarding
the environment. And, I'm proud that my department is playing a
lead role in the TransitPass program.
I'm so proud that Public Works and Government Services Canada is
signing on to this new program to encourage green commuting and
the use of the two local transit authorities, OC Transpo and STO.
A big thank you to them for their commitment to improving transit
for federal employees.
The program provides up to a 15% discount for riders, the convenience
of an annual pass, and an easy payment method through payroll deductions
and pre authorized bank account debits.
Getting people out of cars and into buses will help reduce greenhouse
gases, smog and congestion. One busload of passengers means 40 fewer
cars on the road at rush hour - and that translates to 175 fewer
tones of emission in one year.
Each commuter who opts for public transportation helps to protect
the environment. Each commuter who leaves a car at home contributes
to cleaner air.
Public Works and Government Services Canada is encouraging all
employees to take up the challenge of reducing their greenhouse
gas emissions by one tonne.
Other departments and agencies will soon be joining the TransitPass
program as well.
But again, I would like to applaud my department for its leadership
role in helping to "green government". We run a huge fleet
of fuel-efficient vehicles. We've reduced greenhouse gas emissions
by about 24 percent since 1990. We are promoting the purchase of
"green" products by other departments. And now I'm encouraging
Public Work employees to enjoy the convenience and savings of the
transit pass……
Congratulations and welcome aboard. Thank you.
