Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is proposing to amend the existing Marine
Mammal Regulations (MMR) of the Fisheries Act. Amending the MMR will ensure
that all Canadians clearly understand their responsibilities with regard to
protecting marine mammals and that DFO has the tools to fulfill its mandate.
As part of the regulatory amendment process, the Department conducted
consultations with the public to receive input and feedback on proposed
areas of change in 2003 and 2004.
After considering the input and feedback received from the 2003-2004
consultations the department has now drafted a set of proposed regulations.
The department is now conducting another round of consultations prior to
invoking the formal regulatory process that will result in the proposed
regulations becoming law.
