Research is at the core of the knowledge that informs and supports public policy and decision making. As the federal government moves forward on a long-term strategy for meeting Canada's infrastructure needs in communities, forward-looking horizontal research on infrastructure issues is more important than ever.

The mission of Infrastructure Canada's Research and Analysis Division is to ensure that a more comprehensive knowledge foundation is in place to support and inform policy and decision making.

The Research and Analysis Division is responsible for the Infrastructure Canada Research Strategy. That strategy responds to the widely recognized need for a more comprehensive, rigorous and integrated knowledge base to support evidence-based strategic policy development, decision making and communication with Canadians and other stakeholders on public infrastructure issues and the critical roles it plays in communities across the country.

This integrated Strategy has three components:

Knowledge generation - Building new knowledge that responds directly to priority gaps in understanding of public infrastructure issues in communities across Canada that is key for policy purposes;

Community building - Fostering the development of a stronger, better networked, multi-disciplinary community of researchers and other experts committed to meeting the needs of policy and decision makers; and

Knowledge dissemination and transfer - Developing innovative, effective ways to disseminate and communicate knowledge among policy and decision makers, experts, practitioners, researchers, communities, non-governmental organizations, industry and the general public.
