Welcome to the Jean Canfield Government of Canada Building Website

The Government of Canada 's Jean Canfield building in Charlottetown will be the most environmentally friendly building ever constructed by Public Works and Government Services Canada. Situated at 191 University Avenue, bordering on Fitzroy and Euston Streets, site preparation work has been completed and building construction began in June, 2005.

In an effort to successfully integrate old and new, this four-story building will blend advanced environmental design features and technologies, with the character and historic architecture that is evident throughout Charlottetown. The building will serve as a showcase for environmental technologies including a reflective roof, use of natural light and shade to moderate temperature and the recycling of rainwater to reduce water consumption.

Three Government of Canada initiatives guided the design, site preparation phases and will continue to have a significant impact on the construction phase of the building. They are:

  • Sustainable Development and building practices to minimize adverse impacts upon the environment in the short and long term;
  • Employing the principles of Connectivity to increase efficiency and make services to Canadians more accessible;
  • Creating Supportive Work Environments to ensure federal government employees have the space, tools and technology they need to be comfortable, effective and efficient.

Upon completion, the Jean Canfield building will house 500 federal employees representing a variety of departments lead by Veterans Affairs Canada.

When the building opens in the Summer of 2007, Public Works and Government Services Canada will have raised the bar for green building construction in Canada and throughout North America.
