The Fisherman
Canada has ready access to the most extensive fishing grounds in the
world. The waters, both coastal and inland, annually yield an abundance
of high quality fish of many kinds. The industry based on this resource
is steadily growing in economic importance and at the time of the issue
of this stamp, added $170,000,000 to the national income.
The central subject depicts a typical fisherman hauling his net into
an open boat. A wide border with a fish-net background illustrates sixteen
varieties of fisheries products. From the Pribilof seal at the bottom centre,
arranged clockwise are the following: clam, tuna (albacore), halibut, herring,
mackerel, cod, shrimp, scallop, lobster, Atlantic salmon, sockeye salmon,
lake trout, whitefish, haddock and oyster. The whole design is intended
to emphasize the wealth of Canada´s vast fisheries.
