Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund
In its 2003 budget, the Government of Canada announced the creation of the
Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) to support smaller-scale municipal
infrastructure projects aimed at improving quality of life or fostering
sustainable development and economic development, particularly within smaller
communities. This Fund also includes a specific component intended to meet the
infrastructure needs of First Nations communities.
- Improvement and extension of basic infrastructure in such areas as water
filtration and the wastewater treatment, culture and recreation.
- Better quality of life and more economic prospects for smaller and First
Nations communities.
- A total of $576 million invested in the projects carried out under

The Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund is jointly administered by Canada
Economic Development and Quebec's Ministère des Affaires municipales et des
