Troubleshooting Windows XP

If you are seeing either of the following pages, please follow the next group diagnosis cases that can be used to determine the type of Java VM installed.

Case 1: No Java VM installed — ie: Windows XP New Install

No Microsoft VM or Java - Sun

If there is no Java VM available there will be only HTTP 1.1 settings and the next category is Multimedia.

Corrective action: Have the user download the latest publicly distributed version of the Sun Java VM — currently 1.5.0_01 at the time of this update.

Case 2: Identifying that user only has Microsoft Java VM installed in the Internet Explorer:

Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, NT 4 or Windows XP upgrade

Identifying that user only has Microsoft Java Vm installed in Internet Explorer

If there is only Microsoft Java VM installed there will be Microsoft VM between HTTP 1.1 settings and Multimedia.

Corrective action: If JIT compiler not checked...check it and restart PC.

Case 3: Identifying that user has both Microsoft Java VM and Sun Java VM installed in Internet Explorer

Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, NT 4 or Windows XP upgrade

Identifying that user has both Microsoft Java VM and Sun Java VM installed in Internet Explorer

If there is a Microsoft Java VM and a Sun Java VM installed there will be both the Java (Sun) and Microsoft VM categories between HTTP 1.1 settings and Multimedia.

Corrective actions: You must choose to use either the Microsoft Java VM or the Sun Java VM but not both. To use the Microsoft Java VM (Microsoft VM) verify that JIT compiler is checked...if it is not check it and restart PC.

Or

To use the Sun Java VM — Java Sun — verify that "Use Java 2 v<version> for ..." is checked and ensure that the version level of the Sun Java VM is 1.4.2_04 or greater. If you are using Sun Java VM version 1.5, please download World Wide Web Site version 1.5.0_01.

Warning: The user cannot have both JIT compiler and "Use Java 2v<version> for..." checked.

Case 4: Identifying that user has only the Sun Java VM installed in Internet Explorer:

Windows XP New Install — Sun Java VM added

Identifying that user has only the Sun Java VM installed in Internet Explorer

If there is only the Sun Java VM installed there will be only Java — Sun — in between HTTP 1.1 settings and Multimedia.

Corrective actions: Ensure that the "Use Jave 2v<version> for ..." is checked.

Ensure that the version level of the Sun Java VM is 1.4.2_04 or greater. If you are using Sun Java VM version 1.5, please download World Wide Web Site version 1.5.0_01.
