STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

October 7, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement on the news that Mr. Israel (Izzy) Asper, Founder and Chairman of CanWest Global Communications Corp, has passed away:

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Izzy Asper. Izzy was a great personal friend and one of the finest and most able individuals I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He was a distinguished businessman, politician and outstanding Leader of the Liberal Party in Manitoba from 1970-75. From his base in Winnipeg he built a successful international media company and national television network that has received international acclaim. In addition to his distinguished career, his work with The Asper Foundation supported many cultural and educational initiatives.

Izzy was a wonderful person. He was blessed with great leadership skills, abiding compassion for others and a truly winning way with people. His contributions to his community and country will not be forgotten. Above all, Izzy always remained a regular guy.

Aline joins me in extending our most heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Ruth, and their three children, David, Gail and Leonard."
