ST. JEAN-BAPTISTE DAY

June 20, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's message on the occasion of St. Jean-Baptiste Day:

"Canada's unique history and our culture of diversity find a joyful expression on St. Jean-Baptiste Day. It is a day for the millions of French-Canadians, Francophones and Francophiles, from coast to coast to coast, to celebrate their identity and heritage. But in true Canadian fashion, the celebration of French language and culture extends to all citizens, of all backgrounds, who find their society enriched by the linguistic and cultural diversity of our nation.

The vital role of French language and culture in Canadian society make our nation unique in North America and has become an essential part of our trademark in the international arena. This diversity deepens our understanding of world trends and events and has been key in Canada's role as peacemaker and peacekeeper on the world stage.

Aline joins me in wishing everyone a very happy St. Jean-Baptiste Day."
