Over $5,000 in fines for Patrick’s Cove man

Placentia – A Patrick’s Cove man has been fined $5,000 for netting salmon in inland waters.

Gerald Francis Tobin was convicted in December, 2004 in provincial court in Placentia. In addition to the $5,000 for netting salmon, Tobin was fined an additional $350 for possessing improperly tagged salmon. A total of 78 Atlantic salmon seized in the case were forfeited to the Crown.

A joint enforcement team of DFO fishery officers, fishery guardians, provincial conservation officers and the RCMP apprehended Tobin and three other men after they were observed netting salmon in Branch River the night of August 3, 2004.

The remaining three individuals face similar charges and will have their cases heard in early January.
