OVER 100 VOLUNTEERS LEND A HAND
November 10, 1999
Tracadie --
During the last few months, more than 100 volunteers have worked together to
improve the environment and pick up marine debris by participating in a Beach Sweep.
The Beach Sweep information kit was put together to meet the needs of people concerned
about the extent of littering who want to do their part by cleaning up shorelines.
By getting involved in coastal clean-ups, individuals can play an active role in the
protection and preservation of coastal areas, which are important plant and wildlife
habitats. This initiative is a joint project of the Department of Fisheries and
Oceans Canada and of the New Brunswick Sustainable Development program.
This year's activities revealed that litter is found in all coastal regions of
New Brunswick. This initiative helped to determine that the majority of the garbage
picked up along the coast consists of plastic material. Furthermore, the percentage
of plastic material is greater in coastal areas near major population centres.
However, in rural areas, one can find just about anything from abandoned television
sets to mattresses, and even toilet bowls!
By participating in coastal clean-ups, volunteers help improve the environment,
inform the public about the extent and impact of littering, collect data for studies
on marine debris, and promote more environmentally friendly behaviour.
A special thanks to everyone who volunteered in 1999, to the coordinators
in charge, and especially to the Association Scouts de Sheila, the Bathurst N.B.C.C.
and its environmental committee, the Bathurst and Bouctouche sustainable development
groups, and, last but not least, the employees of la Dune de Bouctouche.
Thanks to all!
