OPENING OF THE INSHORE HERRING FISHERY IN THE BAIE DES CHALEURS, ESCUMINAC AND WESTERN PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND



MONCTON - QUEBEC - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), announced today that the inshore herring fishery in the Baie des Chaleurs, fishing area 16B, will open at noon on August 11, 1996 while the fishery in Escuminac/Western P.E.I., fishing areas 16 C & E, will open at noon on August 21, 1996.

In the Baie des Chaleurs, one trip a day with a retention limit of 20,000 lbs, 100 % dockside monitoring and weekend closures from noon Friday to noon Sunday will apply. In Escuminac/Western P.E.I., one trip a day with a retention limit of 20,000 lbs and 100 % dockside monitoring will also apply. However, weekend closures will only run from noon Saturday to noon Sunday and a cap of 1,000 t for the first week ending on August 24 will be implemented.
