DFO MAINTAINS LEGAL SIZE FOR SOFT-SHELL CLAMS IN EASTERN NOVA SCOTIA
HALIFAX - Conservation measures are in place to help maintain
stocks of soft-shell clams in eastern Nova Scotia.
The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) wishes to
advise that the minimum legal harvestable shell length for soft-shell
clams taken between Hartlen Point, Halifax County, and the Canso
Causeway will remain at 50 mm. (2 inches) for 1996.
This minimum-length measure affects both the recreational and
commercial harvesting of soft-shell clams in that area and was
put into place at the request of the Eastern Nova Scotia Soft
Shell Clam Advisory Committee (comprising harvesters, scientists
and government advisors) in 1995 and has been extended for another
year.
Those taking clams are also reminded that, due to human health
concerns, certain areas are closed to the harvest of clams and
mussels during various times of the year. Contact your local
DFO office, or call (902) 426-1781 to check on the open or closed
status of any area before harvesting.
