COMMERCIAL HERRING FISHERY IN JULY FOR A PORTION OF HERRING FISHING AREA 16E

MONCTON - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced today that a portion of herring fishing area 16E in the Northumberland Strait will open to herring gill nets on July 1, 1996 and will close July 31, 1996 or when the quota is taken. The portion of the area is defined as the waters inside a straight line joining Fagon Point, New Brunswick to Cape Egmont, Prince Edward Island, and the existing lobster line between lobster fishing areas 25 and 26A.

The quota established for this fishery is 450 tonnes and will be deducted from the July to December fall quota established for herring fishing areas 16C and 16E.

The objective of this July fishery, although not new, is to provide some fishing opportunities to herring fishers who did have a very limited or no fishery in May. In consideration of this and to allow for a reasonable distribution of the resource amongst fishers, the following measures will apply:

  1. Fishers will have to choose between a fishery in July and one in August to December. Those who will opt for a fishery in July must surrender their August to December licence conditions and request an amendment of their licence conditions to their local Licensing Centre before they can be authorized to participate in this fishery.
  2. The maximum amount of herring permitted to be caught or retained in a fishing trip within a 24 hour period will be 12,500 lbs or 50 barrels (1 barrel is equivalent to 250 lbs). Also, fishers will be limited to a maximum of one fishing trip per 24 hour period, from 12:00 hours to 12:00 hours on the following day. This will be a five day a week fishery commencing at noon Sunday until noon Friday of each week.
  3. Gill nets are restricted to a maximum of 150 fathoms in length, 125 meshes deep, with a minimum mesh size of 2 5/8 inches.
  4. Landings are subject to the Dockside Monitoring Program and are limited to ports located inside the area open for fishing.
