DFO ANNOUNCES DRAW FOR SNOW CRAB ACCESS

Halifax - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) today announced there will be a draw to allow seven Nova Scotia fishermen temporary access to Snow Crab resources off eastern Nova Scotia.

All new, temporary entrants will be determined by public draw using applications from eligible fishermen. The temporary permits will be restricted to the fishing of 10 traps, all of which must be tagged with valid tags issued by DFO.

The draw will be held at 1000 AM at the Skye Travel Lodge, Port Hastings, N.S. on Monday, August 12th, 1996. Applicants should note that the regular, commercial fishery in both CFA 23 and 24 already will be underway by the time of the draw. The season in CFA 23 runs from July 22 - September 15, and the season in CFA 24 runs from August 1- September 30th.

How to Qualify for the Temporary Licences to be Issued by Public Draw

  1. Must be a CORE fisherman.
  2. Must historically* have fished other species from either CFA23 or CFA24 (*historically referring to 1995, at least) and be applying for a temporary snow crab permit in that CFA only.
  3. Must hold a groundfish licence. First priority will be given to licence holders who hold groundfish licences only.
  4. Must not currently (at time of application) hold a commercial or exploratory snow crab licence, nor have held a temporary permit for this fishery in 1995.

Eligible fishermen may submit only one application to the draw. The letter of application must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, August 6, 1996 and sent to:
