CLOSURE OF THE COMMERCIAL INSHORE HERRING FISHERY IN FISHING AREA 16G (FISHERMEN'S BANK)

MONCTON - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), announced today that the inshore herring fishery in Area 16G, that is Fishermen's Bank, will close at noon on September 11, 1996. The Department estimates that 7,200 tonnes will have been landed by closing time. This compares with landings of 4,078 tonnes in 1995. While this year's landings have increased by 77 %, the estimated landed value, at 3 million dollars, has more than doubled over last year. Overall, it has been a successful season for inshore fishermen in that area.
