SUCCESFUL PROPOSALS FOR THE 1998 SILVER HAKE DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM

Halifax - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Maritimes
Region, today announced that a decision has been made on proposals
for the 1998 Silver Hake Developmental Program.
"The decision is based on careful consideration of information supplied
to DFO by the five companies submitting proposals, and followed the eligibility
criteria" stated Neil Bellefontaine, Regional Director-General of DFO´s
Maritimes Region.
An allocation of 8,000 t of silver hake will be offered to Han Beck
Seafoods for the 1998 fishery.
The remaining 1,625 t silver hake allocation will be offered to Yarmouth
Sea Products, subject to the provision of additional project details.
The criteria established for the initial review of proposals stipulated
that the application must come from a registered Canadian company, the
applicant must own or lease and manage a Canadian fish processing plant
and have (or proposed) significant investment in the processing of silver
hake.
On December 8, 1997, DFO´s Minister Anderson announced the allocation
shares for the 55,000 t 1998 silver hake fishery.

42.5 per cent allocated to the established developmental participants,
-
30 per cent allocated to the competitive pool for the domestic fleet,
-
17.5 per cent allocated to encourage new developmental fisheries under
the Silver Hake Developmental Program (9,625t).

10 per cent would be reserved for the foreign fishery (down from 25 per
cent in 1997).
On December 24, 1997, DFO´s Maritimes Region issued a call for new proposals
for the silver hake developmental fishery. The release stated that detailed
criteria and operating guidelines for this fishery are available from DFO.
The release stated that to be considered applications must be submitted
to DFO by January 2, 1998, and that a decision on the successful applicants
would be made by January 31, 1998.
