SPRING SALMON ANGLING MEASURES

April 20, 1998

Moncton -- The Department of Fisheries and Oceans today reminded anglers of precautionary measures to conserve Atlantic salmon stocks in the spring salmon angling seasons.

Spring salmon fisheries are directed toward salmon that entered rivers the previous year, spawned in the fall, overwintered in the river, and are returning to sea where they will recondition before returning to the river to spawn again. These salmon are referred to as kelts.

The Miramichi River and its tributaries, as well as waters tributary to the Bay of Chaleur, excluding the Restigouche and Nipisiguit Rivers, are open April 15 through May 15 for angling of kelts. Because of low salmon returns in 1998, anglers will be permitted to retain one grilse daily. There is no catch and release and limit for kelt, but anglers are not permitted to continue fishing after retaining either their daily catch limit or annual limit of eight grilse.

The Restigouche River downstream of the Patepedia River will be open for angling of kelts between May 1 and May 31. Anglers are not permitted to retain catches, but there is no limit on the number of salmon that anglers may hook and release.

The following waters will be closed to angling for kelts in 1998: the Nipisiguit River (Salmon Zone 15). all waters tributary to the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Westmorland and Kent Counties (Salmon Zone 16); and all waters tributary to the Bay of Fundy (Salmon Zone 23).

Anglers are reminded to check with the 1998 Provincial Angling Summary, or their local Fisheries and Oceans or Department of Natural Resources and Energy offices for further clarification on spring salmon angling seasons.
