SOUTHERN GULF STRIPED BASS MANAGEMENT PLAN
June 4, 1998
Moncton -- The Department of Fisheries
and Oceans today announced its management plan for striped bass in the
southern Gulf of St Lawrence. This plan is a continuation of a comprehensive
initiative begun in 1992 to recover depleted striped bass stocks to levels
capable of sustaining viable commercial, recreational and native food fisheries.
Despite promising signs of recovery in
recent years, it now appears that the southern Gulf striped bass population
is in decline. Biologists are not able to confirm the cause of the decline,
but have recommended continuation of a precautionary fishery management
program.
The cornerstone of the plan is escapement
of striped bass from all commercial and recreational fisheries to ensure
spawning success. Commercial sale of striped bass is prohibited, and anglers
are restricted to catch and release. Aboriginal communities also harvest
striped bass for food, social and ceremonial purposes, but have agreed
to limit catches of striped bass consistent with current management and
conservation objectives.
