OPENING OF THE LOBSTER FISHERY SEASON - LFA 25
July 31, 1998
Moncton -- The Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Gulf Fisheries,
today announced the opening of the 1998 lobster fishing season in Lobster
Fishing Area (LFA) 25. The season will begin at 6 a.m. on Thursday, August
6, and will end on Wednesday, October 7, 1998. LFA 25 covers the southeast
of New Brunswick, a portion of the Gulf Nova Scotia coastline, and the
southwestern part of Prince Edward Island.
The decision to move the fishing season forward by a few days was taken
further to consultations with inshore fishers´ groups (MFU, PEIFA). For
processors, starting the season in the middle of the week will enable the
plants to more efficiently manage the distribution of catches, which are
usually higher at the start of the season.
The Department wishes to reiterate that the new management measures
put in place for the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence in April 1998, will
be implemented in LFA 25. The measures consist of an increase in minimum
carapace size by 0.8 mm (1/32") to 67.5 mm (2-21/32"), plus 50 % V-notching
on egg-bearing females with evaluation for a permanent implementation in
1999.
The Department recognizes that opinions in the lobster industry are
divided as to the benefits of V-notching and more information is wanted.
V-notching will also be discussed during the next round of consultations
on lobster conservation and on the program announced by the Minister aimed
at doubling lobster egg production over the next four years.
