Agriculture and agri-food

Through the Department of Agriculture and AgriFood, the Government of Canada promotes the development, adaptation and competitiveness of the agriculture and agrifood sector.

The Department and the Minister work closely with provincial and territorial counterparts in a number of areas. Federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for agriculture meet every year and put forward programs to improve the performance of the agriculture and agrifood sector in Canada and abroad and to help Canadian farmers.

Fisheries and oceans

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans' responsibilities and programs for fresh waters and oceans are shared with provincial and territorial governments as well as other federal agencies. The multi-jurisdictional nature of freshwater and ocean resources leads to a relatively complex management system.

Forestry, mining and energy

Jurisdiction over natural resources such as energy, forests and minerals and metals is provincial. The Government of Canada does however play a role as a facilitator in the development of national strategies. Its policies and programs encourage sustainable development through the integration of economic, social and environmental objectives in decisions to develop energy, forestry and mineral resources. To that end, the Government of Canada works closely with the provincial and territorial governments and natural resources industries.
