MINISTER PROCLAIMS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH WEEK

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- January 2 to 8 is Environmental Health Week in Prince Edward Island, recognizing the important work of Public Health Inspectors, Health Minister Chester Gillan noted today.

Environmental Health Week is a national campaign by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI), to recognize the work of all Environmental Public Health Professionals across Canada, and the importance of environmental public health programs in our health care system.

“Islanders may be aware that our local Environmental Health Officers inspect restaurants, child care facilities, nursing homes, community care facilities, swimming pools, tattoo parlours and slaughterhouses,” said Minister Gillan, “but it is important to recognize that these professionals also work diligently to educate the public on issues of safety.”

CIPHI works to protect the health of all Canadians on environmental issues while promoting the science of environmental health and the profession. Environmental Health Officers are certified by the Board of Certification of the CIPHI. This certification process guarantees that the highest standards for entry into the profession are met. CIPHI also provides ongoing opportunities for professional development.

“Certified Public Health Inspectors and Environmental Health Officers are dedicated professionals who are committed to promoting and protecting health and are continually meeting new challenges from our environment that can affect human health,” said Stu MacFadyen, Charlottetown Deputy Mayor. “They bring a practical knowledge and a unique set of skills and expertise that are a critical component of the public health framework.”

“The PEI Lung Association recognizes that PEI's Environmental Health Officers

play a vital role in preventing youth from becoming victims to the devastating

effects of tobacco use,” said Vicky Bryanton, Executive Director, PEI Lung Association. “They also ensure that our safe work environments and public places are free from secondhand hand smoke.”
