Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued the following statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination:
"Each of us, young and old, has a responsibility to help eliminate racism and to ensure that Canada remains a country where tolerance and compassion prevail.
For its part, the Government of Canada continues to work in partnership with its provincial and municipal counterparts to support those private sector and community organizations in their programs to fight racism. I am very proud that on this March 21, the Government of Canada will be marking its tenth national education campaign against racism -- a most effective tool for reaching out to youth and encouraging all Canadians to work together.
As Canadians, we have always taken pride in celebrating our individuality and, at the same time, our unity of ideals and values. Young Canadians, growing up in a diverse, multicultural society, will be our next generation of leaders. That they also grow up in a Canada which embraces inclusiveness, tolerance and justice is one of our nation's greatest achievements. By encouraging an early dialogue on racism, we are planting the seeds to prevent and eliminate racial discrimination.
The symbol for this year's campaign is, again, a hand raised in the universally recognized stop sign. I know that Canadians everywhere will join me in helping to stop racism, and continue supporting the values and principles that sustain our society."
