Prime Minister Announces Nova Scotia Judicial Appointments

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the following appointments to the judiciary in Nova Scotia.

The Honourable Constance Glube of Halifax, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia is appointed Chief Justice of Nova Scotia. She replaces Chief Justice Lorne Clarke, who resigned.

Chief Justice Glube graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1955 and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1956. Chief Justice Glube was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1982 and was the first woman appointed to that Court in 1977. Prior to her appointment to the Bench, she had been City Manager for the City of Halifax.

The Honourable Joseph Phillip Kennedy of Bridgewater, Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia, is appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. He replaces Chief Justice Glube who was appointed Chief Justice of Nova Scotia.

Chief Justice Kennedy graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1968 and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1969. He has been Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia since July 1997. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in April 1997, he had been Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia since 1996 and was Associate Chief Judge of that Court from 1993 to 1996. Prior to his appointment as a judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia in 1978, he practised general law with the firm Kenney, Theakson, Kennedy & Allen, in Bridgewater.

The Honourable Joseph Michael MacDonald, a judge of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in Halifax, is appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. He replaces the Honourable Joseph Kennedy, who was appointed Chief Justice of this Court.

Associate Chief Justice MacDonald received his LL.B. from Dalhousie Law School in 1979 and was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia that year. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia in 1995, Associate Chief Justice MacDonald practised mainly civil litigation in Sydney with the firm of Stewart, McKelvey, Stirling.

These appointments are effective July 1, 1998.
