Statement by the Prime Minister

September 3, 1998
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today expressed sadness on behalf of the Canadian people at the news that a Swissair jet had crashed into the ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia:

"The families and loved ones of those who have been lost in this terrible disaster are in all of our thoughts and prayers.

I have today written to Swiss President Flavio Cotti expressing the deepest sympathies of the people of Canada, and pledging that every resource at our disposal is being devoted to the recovery effort and the investigation.

The bereaved can rest assured that the investigation is in the very best hands. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation, and is also co-ordinating a massive international effort.

I would also like to commend the Canadian Navy, the RCMP and all civilian authorities for their quick response and hard work; and, in particular, the people from the communities around Peggy's Cove for the incredible support they have given the recovery effort."
