The Agreement on Social Security between Canada and the United States was signed on March 11, 1981 in Ottawa, Canada. The Agreement came into force on August 1, 1984. A supplementary agreement was signed on May 10, 1983 in Ottawa, Canada. The Supplementary Agreement came into force on August 1, 1984. A second supplementary agreement was signed on May 28, 1996 in Ottawa, Canada. The Second Supplementary agreement came into force on October 1, 1997.
