OTTAWA – Earlier today the Conservative Party’s commitment to reduce the GST received the endorsement of both the Canadian Home Builders’ Association and the Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association. The endorsements came after Conservative Leader Stephen Harper confirmed the Conservative Party plan to reduce the GST from 7% to 5% will deliver substantial savings to purchasers of new and substantially renovated homes.
“We are very pleased that housing affordability is receiving this level of attention,” said David Wassmansdorf, President of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association. “Reducing the GST on new homes would be a real benefit for buyers,” (Canadian Home Builders’ Association News Release, January 19, 2006).
“Harper’s announcement demonstrated a clear recognition of the strategic importance of the homebuilding and renovation industry within the Canadian economy,” (Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association Press Flash Fax, January 19, 2006).
Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party welcome and greatly appreciate these endorsements, copies of which are attached hereto.
