Canadians are keenly aware that increasing economic development, globalization, and population growth are stressing the Earth's ecological limits in critical areas, such as deforestation, ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity, smog, contaminated water and climate change. Slowing economic growth would only serve to reduce our quality of life. Instead, new environmental and energy technologies are needed to ensure sustainable development so that we - and future generations - will continue to enjoy the benefits of a healthy environment.

Canadian companies are world-class leaders in the development of environmental and energy technologies. The Government of Canada supports Canadian environmental companies with great ideas to allow them to build on their strengths - balancing economic growth with environmental protection.

Specifically, TPC's environmental strategy enables companies to further their technologies, and pursue significant breakthroughs in the development of sustainable energy alternatives; and in pollution prevention, abatement and remediation. Environmental R&D investments cover promising Canadian technologies in five key areas: traditional environmental media (such as clean water, and waste reduction), eco-efficient industrial practices, improved energy efficiency, alternate energy sources (including hydrogen and fuel cell technologies) and renewable energy.

TPC's h2 Early Adopters (h2EA) program embraces a ground-breaking federal initiative to position Canada as an international leader in the demonstration and early adoption of hydrogen and hydrogen-compatible technologies. Canada is a world leader in the evolution of the early stages of a hydrogen economy, and this program is encouraging companies to work together to demonstrate the potential of these important technologies.

TPC works in partnership with other government departments and levels of government to maximize investment in key emerging technologies.
