Promising Approaches Project
Promising Approaches Project - Phase I
In 2003, the National Secretariat on Homelessness (NSH)
in collaboration with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada's
Evaluation and Data Development (EDD) team undertook a Promising
Approaches Project (PAP). The intent of Phase I was to identify and
collect information on effective local projects in the areas of
transitional and supportive housing, and to distribute that knowledge
to communities so that they may learn from each other's best practices and experiences.
A national steering committee comprised of NSH, EDD, regional, community and provincial
representatives presented a call for Promising Approaches nominations that was
opened more broadly than Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative (SCPI)
funded projects only. The steering committee used several selection and screening
criteria to guide the nomination process and identified eight projects
from 21 nominations as the Phase I Promising Approaches.
Promising Approaches Project - Phase II
PAP has evolved into an initiative providing Canadian organizations and communities
with an opportunity to share experiences, strengthen communication links and encourage
others to develop new effective solutions for their local homelessness challenges.
In 2005, the NSH undertook Phase II of Promising Approaches, placing a significant
emphasis on identifying homelessness initiatives demonstrating strong sustainable partnerships.
As with Phase I, a national steering committee (including community representatives) was responsible
for overseeing all aspects of Promising Approaches. This included distribution of
the nomination kits in all provinces and territories and targeting a wider array of homelessness services and agencies.
A total of 99 project nominations were received from 10 provinces and territories. The NSH is pleased to announce the national
steering committee has selected 20 projects from across Canada as
the 2005 Phase II Promising Approaches. Please re-visit our Web site over the coming weeks for more detailed information
on each of the final selections including stories concerning individuals helped by each Promising Approach and who have
successfully transitioned out of homelessness into healthier and more stable lifestyles.
