Status of Women Canada (SWC) is the federal government agency which promotes gender equality, and the full participation of women in the economic, social, cultural and political life of the country. SWC focuses its work in three areas: improving women's economic autonomy and well-being, eliminating systemic violence against women and children, and advancing women's human rights. * International Women's Day
March 8 is International Women's Day (IWD) .

* Public Consultation - Gender Equality
The on-line consultation on gender equality is now officially closed.

The Honourable Liza Frulla, Minister for Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, along with Status of Women Canada, extends sincere appreciation to all those who participated on-line and in other activities during the fall 2005 consultation process. A summary report is expected to be posted on this Web site in December.

* Expert Panel on Accountability Mechanisms for Gender Equality
The Government of Canada has created an expert panel to study accountability and provide advice on strengthening gender equality in Canada. Georgina Steinsky-Schwartz, Louise Langevin and Dorienne Rowan-Campbell will serve on the panel.
