Aboriginal people, their cultures and their contributions lie at the heart of Canadian identity. The Aboriginal Affairs Branch works with Aboriginal people, primarily off-reserve, to celebrate and strengthen their cultural distinctiveness as an integral part of Canadian diversity.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is committed to improving the quality of life of Aboriginal people, and increasing their full participation in, and contribution to, Canada's civic and cultural life. Our programs and initiatives apply to such diverse areas as languages, broadcasting, heritage, women and youth.

Our Vision...

Flourishing Aboriginal societies participating fully in the life of a Canada enriched by Aboriginal contributions, cultures and heritage, and a relationship between government and Canadian citizens founded on dialogue and mutual respect.

Towards strong Aboriginal organizations, communities, cultures and languages based on true partnership, mutual understanding and inclusion.
