Deputy Secretary General opens International Conference on Child Rights (Bucharest, 2 February)
[02/02/06 12:00:00] Opening the conference, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio said that the Council of Europe played an important role in protecting children's rights in Europe, especially by devising and introducing standards, programmes and policies intended to serve children's best interests. Reaffirming her wish to make Europe a corporal punishment-free continent, she announced a programme entitled ''Supporting parents in the best interests of the child'', which would be focused mainly on parenting in conditions of poverty and social exclusion and on parents' role in preventing violence against children.

Lecture-debate at Librairie Kléber bookshop on 4 February
[31/01/06 16:00:00] To mark the publication of ''The Right to Life'', Council of Europe Publishing is arranging a lecture-debate at the bookshop Librairie Kléber at 5 pm on Saturday 4 February (1 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, Strasbourg) with the author. Professor Bertrand Mathieu, who teaches at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, is director of its Constitutional Law Research Centre. The book, which looks at euthanasia, cloning, abortion and medically assisted procreation, is the first in a new collection entitled ''Europeans and their rights''.

Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee publishes report on the Slovak Republic
[02/02/06 09:30:00] The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) published on 2 February the report on its visit to the Slovak Republic in February / March 2005, together with the Slovak Government's response. These documents have been made public at the request of the Slovak authorities.

Latest Council of Europe report on organised crime
[31/01/06 11:30:00] According to the report published on 31 January by the Organisation on the situation of its 46 member States, drug trafficking, trafficking in human beings, cybercrime and money-laundering are the main threats currently posed by organised crime in Europe. A special chapter focuses on economic crime presently estimated to be the most profitable area for criminals.
