Preamble

The Medical Imaging Technology Roadmap Steering Committee recommended the production of a discussion paper to provide background information on the current global and Canadian status as well as future trends in the medical imaging sector. This paper, entitled, "Medical Imaging: Discussion Paper", was prepared by ORTECH under contract to Industry Canada. It was completed March 30, 1998, using information available at that time. It provides analysis and projections of future developments and opportunities for the Canadian medical imaging industry. Prior to publishing this document on Strategis in May 1999, the Steering Committee made several changes to reflect new information with respect to PACS and the role of the radiologist.

The Steering Committee feels that the revised document will serve as a useful background document for the Working Groups as they tackle the development of the Medical Imaging Technology Roadmap. It provides a shared background and should serve to generate discussion about future needs for medical imaging technologies. As the Roadmap takes shape, information gaps will be filled and other information updated.
