This subsector comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing chemicals and chemical preparations, from organic and inorganic raw materials.

Establishments primarily engaged in the following activities are excluded: - field processing of crude petroleum and natural gas (NAICS 211, Oil and Gas Extraction);
- beneficiating mineral ores (NAICS 212, Mining (except Oil and Gas));
- processing crude petroleum and coal (NAICS 324, Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing); and
- smelting and refining ores and concentrates (NAICS 331, Primary Metal Manufacturing).
