Definition of the Subsector

This subsector comprises establishments primarily engaged in manufacturing chemicals and chemical preparations, from organic and inorganic raw materials.

Exclusions

Establishments primarily engaged in the following activities are excluded:

  • field processing of crude petroleum and natural gas (NAICS 211, Oil and Gas Extraction);
  • beneficiating mineral ores (NAICS 212, Mining (except Oil and Gas));
  • processing crude petroleum and coal (NAICS 324, Petroleum and Coal Products Manufacturing); and
  • smelting and refining ores and concentrates (NAICS 331, Primary Metal Manufacturing).
