Canvassing

With all the emphasis on electronic privacy, it's easy to forget that there are many old-fashioned ways to compromise our privacy. When personal information is collected, it doesn't really matter how it is collected. Door-to-door canvassers seek donations, raise funds and promote religious awareness. As part of that process, they collect many kinds of personal information that can be used in ways that may be different than you expect. Your information may be sold to marketers or entered into electronic databases and data mined.

The key is knowing who you are giving your data to - and why. An order pad and a name tag just isn't enough to identify a door-to-door canvasser. Before you hand over your personal information, make sure that the person you are giving it to is collecting it for legitimate purposes. Is it going to be sold or used in ways you won't like? Unless you are sure, don't hand it over!
