Chris Smart

Applications are invited from health researchers in Canada, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean for the first Global Health Research Program Development and Planning Grants.

The grants program aims to fund North-South health research collaborations to build research capacity in Canada and in developing countries.

Two types of grants are available:

Planning grants to enable Canadian groups of researchers to prepare a proposal, in collaboration with low or middle-income countries, in preparation for a future Network/Centre grants competition.

  • Up to CA $ 50,000 will be provided to groups of researchers based at one Canadian institution.
  • Up to CA $75,000 will be provided to groups of researchers based at multiple Canadian institutions.

Research program development grants

  • Up to CA $100,000 will be provided to enable Canadian interdisciplinary groups of researchers to develop, collaboratively with their counterparts in poorer and middle-income countries, long-term programs of research.

Applications from smaller institutions and/or from regions where capacity development is at a preliminary level are encouraged.

This project is the first undertaken as part of Canada's Coalition for Global Health Research, established in January 2002 to address problems of global health through research. Signatories include the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), and Health Canada.

Deadlines:

  • Registration of intent to apply: September 1, 2002
  • Full proposals: October 1, 2002
