01. Malaria control in coastal Oaxaca

Some 60% of Mexico, inhabited by almost 45 million people, is susceptible to malaria infection. On joining NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement), Mexico soon completely phased out the use of DDT, formerly an important chemical for controlling the female Anopheles mosquito, carrier of the Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria. Other approaches needed to be developed to counter malaria.
