Vivien Chiam
A research and development grants program has been established by the Asian Media Information and Comunication Centre (AMIC), the Asia Pacific Development Information Program (APDIP) of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and IDRC's Pan Asia Networking Program. Grants will be made available to Asia-Pacific organizations only, for the purpose of funding innovative, applied research on solutions to specific development problems in the Asia-Pacific region in the field of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The main objective of the grants program is to promote an active research and development environment for Internet-based applications, systems and policy research in the Asia-Pacific region. The grants program is expected to foster local entrepreneurship, build research capacities, and accelerate the use of ICTs for development in the region. Small grants of up to US$9 000 and project grants of up to US$30 000 each will be awarded on a competitive basis to successful Asia-Pacific institutions. One of the current grant awardees, Mr Ismail Fahmi of the Institute of Technology, Bandung, in Indonesia, recently won an award from the American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) for his research. Mr Ismail Fahmi's research is on the Indonesian digital library network. For further information on the grants program see Applications for the Grants Program. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2001.
