Jeffrey Sachs on New Approaches to International Donor Assistance
2001-06-07
Professor Jeffrey Sachs, one of the world's best-known economists, will give a public presentation in the IDRC Auditorium, 14th Floor, 250 Albert Street, Ottawa, on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Professor Sachs will discuss new approaches to international donor assistance. In particular, he will elaborate on: more effective pooling and coordination of donor resources, as proposed in the new Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria; a greater focus on the potential role of scientific research in overcoming the problems of the world's poorest countries; significant scaling up of funding; and greater focus on the underlying sources of chronic economic crisis, including disease burden, environmental degradation and climate change, low food productivity, and weak overall scientific capacity in developing countries. Professor Sachs is currently the Director of the Centre for International Development at Harvard University. He also serves as an economic advisor to several governments in Latin America, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Africa and Asia. As well, he chairs the Commission on Macroeconomics and Health of the World Health Organization. To confirm your attendance, please contact Francine Bouchard, IDRC Communications, before June 14: Tel: (613) 236-6163, ext. 2101; Email: fbouchard@idrc.ca
