Task Force on Biotechnology and Emerging Technologies

A Centre-wide Task Force on Biotechnology and Emerging Technologies was established in December 2002.   In the early stages, we suggested the main focus of concern be on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as they relate to agriculture, food security and poverty alleviation.  However, our initial review indicates the importance of examining several areas of biotech, and of the new nanotechnologies and converging technologies (NBIC or nanotech, biotech, information sciences and cognitive sciences) that are acclerating now, enormous in impact, and almost entirely ungoverned nationally and internationally.  We have an 18-month mandate beginning August 2003, to conduct the Centre-wide review (see "Upcoming Activities").  By June 2005 (or earlier), our recommendations to the Centre will be synthesized and complete and presented to the Board of Governors.
