Staff members of IDRC's Regional Office in Cairo - 2005 |
IDRC has worked in close collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa since 1971. Three years later the Centre established a permanent presence in the area with the opening of a regional office in Beirut, Lebanon. Relocated to Cairo, Egypt in 1976, this office is the focus of activities in 10 countries and territories extending from Turkey to Morocco. In the past 30 years IDRC has supported more than 550 research projects directed and managed by researchers and institutions in the region. A series of Country Profiles provides an overview of IDRC's work in the region by country and includes project highlights. Based on IDRC's Corporate Strategy and Program Framework (CSPF 2005-2010), three broad Program Areas will be supported in the region, namely: Environment and Natural Resource Management (ENRM), Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D), and Social and Economic Policy (SEP).
- Environment and Natural Resource Management (ENRM)
The work of the ENRM program area is centred on the profound challenges brought about by the complex links between human well-being and the processes of gobalization, development, and natural resource degradation.
- Social and Economic Policy (SEP)
SEP focuses on enhancing the prospects for equitable development in its broadest sense, implying a simultaneous concern for economic growth, poverty reduction, political inclusion, and social justice.
