In Latin American countries where, in the 1980s, military dictatorships gave way to civilian democracies, the new governments inherited an economy in crisis. This book examines the performance of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay as they attempted to formulate economic policiesthat would respond to the claims and aspirations of their citizens during a time of extreme economic instability.

THE EDITORS

Juan Antonio Morales is Professor of Economics and Econometricsat the Catholic University of Bolivia. He has published widely on stabilizationand structural adjustment in Latin America. Currently he is on the Boardof Directors of the Central Bank of Bolivia.

Gary McMahon is a senior economic specialist with IDRC in Canada. He was formerly Professor of Economics at Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada, for eight years. He is editor of Lessons in Economic Policy for Eastern Europe from Latin America and co-editor of Fiscal Reform and Structural Change.
